Mission: The Sugar Hill Historic Preservation Society (SHHPS) exists to discover, promote and preserve the rich history of Sugar Hill. The SHHPS scholarship seeks to bridge the past and present by connecting Sugar Hill students with their roots and to encourage excitement for local history in celebration of our community.
Scholarship Essay and Theme:
Choose one of our exhibits in the Sugar Hill History Museum located across from the Eagle Theatre.. How does the history and information included in this exhibit impact or shape Sugar Hill now? For instance, one of our exhibits focuses on schools. How have the schools in our area changed since the exhibit? How do we still see the foundation laid by the original schools in our area? How have we improved upon that tradition?

Scholarship Night at the Museum
Students who are interested in applying can call the museum at 678-541-6125 to check availability. Also, we will host a scholarship Q & A night at the museum on Thursday, March 24th from 5 - 7 pm.
Award: Essays will be reviewed by a committee and evaluated on historical accuracy, relevancy to the theme, creativity, and use of sources/ research. The winning recipient will be notified no later than Friday, May 27th. The Sugar Hill Historic Preservation Society will write a check for the scholarship funds payable directly to the recipient’s school. *Scholarships are awarded based on merit and integrity alone, without regard to name, race, color, ethnicity, gender, or sexual orientation.
Eligibility:
- Must live within Sugar Hill city limits
*If you are unsure about your residency status, please contact the city to determine your eligibility - 2022 High School Graduate
- Applicants must be admitted as a full-time student at a college, university, or trade school program for the 2022 Fall academic semester.
Requirements:
- Completed application
- Proof of residency - copy of driver's license or copy of recent gas bill
- Statement of Accuracy (see attached)
- Essay with word count clearly labeled (must be between 600 and 1000 words)
- Final submissions must be double-spaced, size 12 font, and in Times New Roman
Application and Submission:
All materials including application, essay, proof of address, proof of full-time status and Statement of Accuracy must be posted to the website by Sunday, April 10th. No late applications or material will be accepted.
By submitting your application, you are giving the Sugar Hill Historic Preservation Society permission to publish your essay to the public should yours be the winning essay.
