Sugar Hill, GA – April 19, 2024 – During the 2024 session of the General Assembly, the Governor included an additional $1.5 billion of funding for transportation investments around the state, including some $250 million for local government transportation projects.
The Georgia Department of Transportation has awarded the City of Sugar Hill an additional $306,314.17 of Local Maintenance and Improvement Grant (LMIG) funds. Combining this with the city’s original 2024 LMIG allocation of $247,359.47, as well as $253,000 of SPLOST funds and $150,000 of local funds will enable the city to invest nearly $1,000,000 in road maintenance and paving program.
The annual LMIG allocation is based on a formula that includes the city’s share of total centerline road miles for each local road system in the state and Sugar Hill’s total population as compared with the total statewide population. The LMIG program allows local governments greater flexibility and quicker project delivery.
“Thanks to Representative Matt Reeves, Representative David Clark, and Senator Shawn Still for their advocacy in the Georgia House of Representatives and Senate, and to Governor Brian Kemp, Sugar Hill is getting some additional resources to pave more roads, enhancing our community’s safety and infrastructure, said Mayor Brandon Hembree. We’re grateful for this support, which directly impacts the quality of life for our residents.”
The city plans to resurface twenty-two (22) roads which include neighborhoods, frequently traveled streets in Downtown Sugar Hill, and areas around the city’s parks. Work is expected to be completed by the end of 2024.
“These additional LMIG funds have helped the city double our original road resurfacing program, said Assistant City Manager, Troy Besseche. These state grants represent over half of our funding for road repairs and repaving.”
Garrett Paving has been awarded the construction contract for the Sugar Hill 2024 Street Paving Program. The street resurfacing work will consist of curb and gutter repair (if applicable), base repair, milling of existing asphalt, leveling, new asphalt road course and other related work that extends the life expectancy of a road.
