It is the responsibility of an individual home or business owner to maintain, repair, or replace all components of a septic system. Contact the Gwinnett County Environment Health Dept., 770.963.5132.

The “rule of thumb” is that a building permit is required if you are modifying or adding to an existing structure.

Code Enforcement

A City Code violation can be reported by submitting an online Service Request form, or by calling 770-945-6734 and ask to speak with a Code Enforcement staff member, or by emailing the Code Enforcement at charris@cityofsugarhill and haguilar@cityofsugarhill.com.

You must keep your yard mowed. When the grass height exceeds 12″ you may receive a citation. Vegetation over 12 inches in height. (Property Maintenance Ordinance Section 14-313)

Any vehicles that are inoperable, wrecked, dismantled, abandoned or without a current license plate and decal attached are not allowed. (Zoning Ordinance – Article VI – Section 613 & Property Maintenance Ordinance Section 14-311)

Specialized vehicles such as boats, trailers and recreational vehicles should be parked in the rear or side yards only and must be placed on an all-weather surface. Vehicles with a gross weight of over 4 tons are not allowed.

Signs, other than those belonging to a government, public service agency or railroad are prohibited in the right-of-way.

Any fence that stands more than three feet in height requires a permit.

Public Safety

Sugar Hill’s Public Safety Department is located on the bottom level of City Hall. To speak with a City Marshal in-person, please call 770-932-2532 to schedule an appointment and check in at Customer Service.

If you are not sure if you are a city resident, please call Customer Service at 770-945-6716 for confirmation.

Sugar Hill City Marshals are authorized to perform the duties of any POST certified officer in the State of Georgia. The Marshal’s Office is trained to respond, intervene, and will call Gwinnett County Police if necessary. Residents may contact the Marshal’s Office directly at 770-932-2532 for non-emergency matters such as parking, extra patrols, crime prevention, and youth programs.

In an emergency, dial 911 immediately. An emergency is any situation that requires immediate assistance from the police, fire department or ambulance.

The Marshal’s Office is available between the hours of 6 a.m. – 9 p.m. to assist residents.

Signs restricting parking from 2 a.m. – 4 a.m. will be posted throughout the E Center parking deck.

Be on the lookout for additional parking restrictions on West Broad St. Once the parking signs are installed, enforcement will begin.
