POSITION TITLE: Custodial Supervisor

DEPARTMENT: Facilities

REPORTS TO: Facilities Manager

SUPERVISES: Custodial Staff

EMPLOYMENT STATUS: Full Time: Hours may vary and include weekdays, weekends, and nights.


POSITION SUMMARY:

The primary function of the Custodial Supervisor is to oversee the daily cleaning and sanitation operations for the City-owned or operated facilities. This is a ‘working’ supervisor position and will perform all tasks/assignments as needed to maintain a high level of sanitation and cleanliness throughout. The Custodial Supervisor is also responsible for training new employees in proper custodial procedures for the use of manually operated tools, electrically powered machines, cleaning compounds, solvents, and chemicals.


POSITION DUTIES:

  • Supervises the activities of the custodial staff directly by using both verbal and written instructions in compliance with the guidelines provided by the immediate supervisor and using independent judgment in instances not covered by the guidelines.
  • Ensures that custodial services meet the needs of the Department/City and established custodial guidelines by scheduling work activities and adjusting workloads to compensate for scheduled and unscheduled events, absences, changing priorities, and special projects.
  • Ensures the quality of custodial services meets established guidelines by inspecting the work of custodial personnel and directing corrective measures to be taken when necessary to meet those guidelines.
  • Develops an effective team of custodial personnel by instructing all employees in the proper methods and use of materials and equipment for safe and efficient work performance, evaluating individual performances to meet established standards, and assisting in providing recommendations on performance evaluations for custodial personnel.
  • Enforces City rules and policies regarding employee conduct, issues verbal warnings and written reprimands for violations, and recommends disciplinary action to the immediate supervisor as appropriate.
  • Ensures that custodial personnel have the equipment and supplies necessary to perform custodial services by issuing supplies as needed, inventorying, and ordering sufficient stock, and storing in a secure storage area. Maintains/cleans custodial equipment.
  • Evaluates new custodial supplies and equipment by conducting testing of such items and recommending the appropriateness of their use.
  • Advises the immediate supervisor on the condition of City buildings and facilities by conducting regular inspections of those areas and reporting the results of the inspections with particular emphasis on areas needing repairs or additional cleaning measures.
  • Ensures that administrative records and reports regarding custodial personnel are accurate and current by reviewing employee timesheets, monitoring employee absences and tardiness.
  • Assists with ensuring that specified contract services are provided by the contractor by inspecting the work performed and advising the immediate supervisor when shortcomings or other deficiencies are noted.
  • Provides continuity of cleaning services by assuming the duties and responsibilities of other custodial staff as required or by special circumstances.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Experience:

  • Graduation from High School or possession of a GED
  • Experience with industry (janitorial) trade cleaning standards: methods, materials, and equipment
  • Experience in the cleaning of facilities
  • One (1) year or more of supervisory experience
  • Holds and maintains a valid driver’s license

  • General familiarity with applicable codes
  • Work on a shift basis, staggered work week, and be able to work unusual hours in emergency situations

The Custodial Supervisor has a primary focus on providing superior workmanship in the cleanliness of city-owned facilities and equipment in the City of Sugar Hill by cleaning and maintaining city-owned assets and completing work in a timely manner. Must maintain professionalism and courtesy when exposed to stressful situations.
