POSITION: Gas System Technician

DEPARTMENT: Gas Utility Department

REPORTS TO: Gas Supervisor

DEPARTMENT HEAD: Assistant City Manager

NATURE OF WORK: This is a skilled technical position where the primary responsibility is for the overall system maintenance and operation of the City’s Natural Gas System. Responsibilities include installing and maintaining gas services. Experience is preferred but not required. All newly hired Gas System Technicians will receive on-the-job certification training to meet the necessary qualifications. Employee may be required to assist other City departments when needed.

POSITION DUTIES:

• Install new gas services and gas mains
• Lay pipe for gas and make sure it is on the right grade
• Repair cut lines and leaks including leaks at the meter
• Operates trencher and other heavy equipment
• Deliver parts/equipment/supplies to field location as needed
• Cathodic protection surveys and remedial action
• Leakage surveys and leak investigations , utilizing standard industry equipment
• Odorization testing and reporting
• Pipeline patrols
• Inspections of mains and services
• Emergency valve inspections and maintenance
• Regulator and relief valve installation, testing maintenance
• Compliance records and documentation
• Understand, review and comply with state and federal pipeline safety regulations
• Maintain Operator Qualification Certification

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

• Ability to work independently and self-motivated
• Possess good verbal and written communication skills
• Hands on job tasks in all weather conditions
• Ability to complete and pass federally required Operator Qualification evaluations
• Ability to operate various company supplied equipment
• Maintain a safe environment for co-workers, clients and the public through adherence to established safety standards and timely reporting of potential hazards
• Maintain a positive work environment through effective interactions and communications with co-workers and management
• Must possess a valid driver’s license and a good driving record
• Ability to pass a background check for criminal history, driving record, employment history and drug/alcohol screening
• Ability to pass random quarterly PHMSA drug screening

PHYSICAL/SENSORY REQUIREMENTS:

• Intermittent standing, walking, bending stooping
• Ability to carry, lift and move materials, equipment and tools
• Ability to use a high degree of dexterity when working with tools and equipment
• Ability to comprehend detailed information and instructions
• Visual and hearing abilities are necessary to perform duties
• Employee may be exposed to noise, dirt, dust, grease and chemicals
• Work is performed outdoors, exposing the employee to inclement weather, and potential harm from animals and insects
