Although Dahlonega’s major claim to fame is its gold mines, many of the initial settlers of Sugar Hill were in fact gold miners. Many of these miners mined from Sugar Hill all the way to the Chattahoochee River. As a celebration of this heritage, the City of Sugar Hill has built a 9.2-acre park named “Gold Mine Park,” which sits along Level Creek Road and serves as a trail head to the Sugar Hill Greenway. The 16-mile trail, will eventually circle around the city, will take hikers by one of the city’s old gold mines. Although the gold has been long depleted, hikers can enjoy a beautiful part of Sugar Hill’s unique history.
