The Sugar Hill Historic Preservation Society is now accepting applications for the organization’s continuing education scholarship. The $1000 scholarship will be awarded to one Sugar Hill student who will be attending college or technical school during the Fall of 2024. Applicants are asked to write an essay discussing one of the Sugar Hill History Museum exhibits. Additional requirements include:

- Community/family displacements
Lake Lanier’s Reservoir Land & Property Archival Program – this site will allow you to search all the properties purchased by the government for Lake Lanier.
Optional Research Event: Attend the Lake Lanier event at the Sugar Hill Museum to get more information on the history of the lake.

***You will earn FIVE bonus points towards your application by attending the event or the exhibit, which is at the museum for a limited time. To earn the points, you must take a selfie at the event or exhibit and include the file with your application.

Award: Essays will be reviewed by a committee and evaluated on historical accuracy, relevancy to the theme, creativity, and use of sources/ research. The winning recipient will be notified no later than Tuesday, December 12th. The Sugar Hill Historic Preservation Society will write a check for the scholarship funds payable directly to the recipient’s school. *Scholarships are awarded based on merit and integrity alone, without regard to name, race, color, ethnicity, gender, or sexual orientation.
Eligibility:
- Must live within Sugar Hill city limits *If you are unsure about your residency status, please check here.
- 2024 High School Graduate
- Applicants must be admitted as a full-time student at a college, university, or trade school program for the 2024 Fall academic semester.
- No AI detected in the entire essay. Each essay will be checked.
- Essays must reach a minimum score of 70 on the rubric to be eligible for scholarship consideration.
Requirements:
- Completed application
- Proof of residency – copy of driver’s license or copy of recent gas bill
- Statement of Accuracy (see attached)
- Essay with word count clearly labeled (must be between 600 and 1000 words)
- Final submissions must be double-spaced, size 12 font, and in Times New Roman
Application and Submission:
All materials including application, essay, proof of address, proof of full-time status and Statement of Accuracy must be posted to the website by November 7, 2023. No late applications or material will be accepted.
